EPDM Roofing Project Timeline; From Planning to Completion

With the warmer months approaching, now is the perfect time to spend time outside maintaining and adding value to your property. 

One tried-and-tested method of adding value is to ensure your flat roof is in good condition, and ready for the challenges of winter. 

In this blog post, we guide you through the DIY EPDM roofing project timeline whilst considering the steps required from planning through to completion.

Project Timeline:

Assessment & Research

Before undertaking the project, a solid understanding of the process and the project area is required. Investigate the roof, looking at factors such as noticeable dips in the roof structure, currently installed roofing material (e.g. rubber/felt), and the measurements of the area to fit with an EPDM membrane.

Once you have a solid understanding of the process and the current condition of the roof, you can move on to the next stage of the project.

Project Planning

With a solid understanding of the challenges of the project, you should have all the information you need to create an itinerary based on the requirements of the roof, including detail kits for internal/external corners, seam tapes if it’s an “L” shaped roof, and pipe boots and trims.

Before moving on to the next step, make sure you’ve accounted for areas such as the above, as well as any roof vents and overhangs.

Ordering Materials & Preparation

With an itinerary created following the previous step, the required materials can now be purchased. We recommend using our EPDM roofing calculator which will generate a quote complete with all of the items you will need depending on the details you supply. This takes into account the amount of materials needed, as well as extras such as trims, detail kits & adhesives.

Roof Preparation

The steps for preparing your roof for an EPDM installation depend heavily on the current condition of the roof structure and the pre-existing roofing material. Make sure that the pre-existing roof deck is in good condition, and not suffering from rot or other types of visible damage. 

If a pre-existing roofing material has been used, additional steps may need to be taken depending on the condition of the material. 

In most cases, EPDM can be laid over a pre-existing roof surfacing, however we recommend the removal of older felt systems before the installation of your new EPDM membrane.
