EPDM Roofing In The Summer - How Does It Fair?

With the summer around the corner, and hopefully blistering heat and long sunny days ahead of us, some of us may be wondering exactly how our EPDM flat roof will fair in the summer sun. Summertime is the time of year when we can all easily get stuck into our DIY projects and home improvements, and therefore, is the perfect time to update your roofing without the risk of getting rained on as much. But how does EPDM fair in the summer? Does the heat affect it positively or negatively? In this article, we are going to find out just that.

Traditional roofing options such as felt roofing are also good, but in the summer, can be susceptible to bubbling or blistering, especially as it starts to age. These issues can then go on to result in cracks, and splitting in the surface of your roof, opening up your building to the risk of leaks and damage. EPDM is a great alternative to these traditional roofing materials, as it can stand the test of time in both blistering hot temperatures and the freezing winter climates the UK sees on the regular.

Why is EPDM a good choice for summer?

EPDM is a strong, synthetic rubber material that comes in large sheets, making it a very simple installation process. EPDM is actually made from vulcanised oil, diene and natural gas ethylene propylene. These components allow the final EPDM product to be strengthened and more flexible and enhance its weather-resistant features. In comparison to alternative roofing products, EPDM can in fact be stretched up to 300% before breaking, splitting and cracking. This allows the EPDM to naturally expand and contract with the heat from the summer and the cold from the winter and all seasons in between. It has been proven to withstand temperatures ranging from -30 degrees celsius to 120 degrees celsius which is well and truly within the average of the British summertime.

Rubber EPDM roofing is not limited to just one or two benefits. It is actually incredibly lightweight, making it extra easy to install without compromising on thickness and strength. This helps it repel the heat while keeping your space cool during the hottest points of the year. It also absorbs the heat in the winter, making it perfect for those freezing British winters!

With EPDM being able to be installed in a single sheet, it makes it a simple DIY material for your projects, as well as saving you money on needing to get a professional installer in to help you. EPDM offers you the best waterproofing option compared to other materials as the sheets have no seams or joints that can risk splitting and letting water in over time.

Best uses for EPDM in the summer

EPDM is an eco-friendly option and is an excellent choice for a large variety of commercial and home building projects, especially fitting in the summer months.

Green Eco Roofing

EPDM can be used for the perfect green eco-roof. A green eco-roof is when plants and grass are placed on the roof, creating a green environment that is beneficial for an array of reasons. A Green roof, also known as an eco-roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. EPDM is the best to use for this due to its water-tight features, as well as its durability and strength to withstand the weight of the greenery.

Shepard Hut Roofing

With more and more people going off the grid and enjoying the fresh country air these days in comparison to staying in built-up, city areas, shepherds' huts are becoming increasingly popular, especially for weekend breaks. EPDM is the ideal roofing material for mobile structures such as Shepherd Huts due to its durability, lightweight and ability to absorb structural movements under which normally felt materials would fail.
