How Environmental Changes Do Not Hinder Your EPDM Roof

How Environmental Changes Do Not Hinder Your EPDM Roof

We all know that many, many environmental changes have been affecting the planet over recent years. With environmental changes, comes a drastic change in weather. This can be worrying for your residential rubber roofing, as diverse and extreme weather can cause roof damage. In this blog post, we are going to uncover why EPDM is a fantastic choice, and how and if extreme weather conditions can hinder your EPDM roof.

Increase in UK weather temperatures

Over the last decade or so in particular, the UK has seen extremely hot summers, with an increase year on year.. With temperatures across the UK having been known to reach up to 37 Degrees Celsius, the question arises of how will this affect your EPDM roof?

Harsh sunlight and extreme heat can cause multitudes of damage to a roof, but our EPDM roof solutions help alleviate these problems, thanks to EPDMs reflective nature. The rubber does not absorb as much heat as other traditional roofing systems.

This means, with an increase in temperatures, your EPDM rubber roof will serve you far longer than any other traditional roofing system, without risk of damage and consequently, saving money in the long run due to lack of repairs needed.

Increase in heavy rainfall

Along with the rising heat, we have also seen a large increase in heavy rainfall over the last few years. Over the last 10 years, there has been an increase in average of 2% more rainfall than recorded previously. +(and if this summer has been anything to go by - it's definitely here to stay)

it is important that you have a roof that will stay adequately protected. Any roof that begins to leak is one that needs to be fixed immediately otherwise you could find yourself with larger problems further down the line.

However, this is where EPDM roofing becomes a top choice once again. Our EPDM roofing has a 50 year life expectancy, meaning homeowners will realistically only need to change or update their roofing once in their lifetime. In comparison to other materials such as fibreglass or felt, your EPDM could possibly last up to twice as long. EPDM also is the most environmentally friendly roofing option.

More frequent extreme weather

We have all experienced the heat and the increased rain, but we have also seen some extreme weather events across the years, with snowfall coming in the forms of “beast from the East” as such the heavy snow fall the UK saw back in 2018. This brought unusually low temperatures and heavy snowfall to large areas across the country. With not only extreme snowfall, Storm Dennis that hit the UK in February 2020 saw gale force winds of up to 80mph.

While this weather can cause huge expenses in repairs to all roofing, the rising cost of wind damage is certainly something to consider when selecting your roof type. Again, this is where EPDM is a fantastic choice to diminish these repair costs drastically. You will see vast benefits from the single-ply membrane, your roof and home is highly protected against raging storms in comparison to more traditional roofing solutions, and is sure to save hundreds on roofing repairs across the years.
